Ways to Play Virginia Pick 4

One of the big draws to Pick 4 is the number of different play styles the game offers. To find out how each of them works, and how the numbers you pick impact your game, check out our quick guide below.

Exact order play
Exact Order Play

To win, match the winning numbers in the exact order they are drawn. This play type has some of the slimmest odds, but if you win, you get the top prize of $5,000!

Any Order Play

To win, match the winning numbers in any order. Depending on the numbers you choose, the odds and prizes change. This is known as the number of Ways you play.

50/50 Play
50/50 Play

Half your bet goes towards an Exact Order play, and the other half is put on an Any Order play. If you win the Exact Order play, you can cash in prizes for both play types!

Combo Play
Combo Play

This is the equivalent of taking every possible combination of your 4 numbers, and making an Exact Order play with each one. In practice, this is like a more expensive Any Order play, with much better prizes!

How many 'Ways' will you play?

For Any Order, 50/50, and Combination plays - plays where you're betting on any possible combinations of your numbers being selected - the odds and prizes change depending on the numbers you choose. This is because some numbers make fewer combinations. For example, you can make 24 combinations from the numbers 0123, but only 4 combinations with 0111. This is known as the number of "Ways" you play.

For Any Order and 50/50 plays, more Ways means better overall odds, but lower prizes. For Combination plays, more Ways means better odds, but a more expensive ticket. Further down the page is a table, so you can compare all the key differences.
